In my opinion, King Sejong is the most influential and important Korean figure in history. He was the fourth king during the Chosun Dynasty. He was born in 1397 and died in 1450.
There are mainly three reasons why I think he is important historically. First of all, he directed making science instruments. Hae Si Gye(a kind of a timer using the sun) and Cheuk Wuki(an instrument used to measure amount of rainfall) are good examples. With the development in science, Chosun was one of the strongest countries at that time.
Secondly, King Sejong had many great followers and retainers. He encouraged many young politicians by embracing their creative ideas. This made Chosun progressive and advanced. His open-minded attitude towards his followers made followers faithful to the king and the country, so that there were few riots or protests against the king. Among other things, lastly, the most incredible achievement of King Sejong was ’the invention of Hangeul’. Most of the countries don’t have their own languages. Chosun was also one of them, borrowing Chinese characters and its language. However, King Sejong invented Hangeul-Korean- in 1444. It was so creative, unique and easy that everyone could learn it easily. Since then, Hangeul has been authorized as ‘a great language’. Therefore, I’m sure that King Sejong is the most memorable figure in Korean history so far.
